What Story Are You Telling Yourself?
by Dr. Andrew T. Brady, Chiropractic Physician
8 years ago I began giving corporate health talks on the science of wellness and prevention to businesses and their employees so that I could share some of the information that I have come across over a decade of research in hopes that I could help my community get healthier. In my experience treating thousands of patients, and presenting to hundreds of businesses, I have come to realize a very interesting thing about the human brain. Someone can have all the right information on how they can get healthier, or how they can achieve better relationships, or how to invest smarter, and they simply do not do it. They know better, but fail to take action so they never get the benefit. Let’s take weight loss for example. I had someone that I knew growing up that always was saying to people WHY they couldn’t lose weight. They would give a hundred different reasons why they couldn’t lose weight such as “I have a slow metabolism” or I can’t lose weight because my hormones are unbalanced” or “I have a thyroid problem” or “I can’t lose weight because I can’t exercise” and the list went on and on. The stories continue even when you see someone else achieve the weight loss, “That might have worked for her BUT that wont work for me because……” The same types of stories can be applied to your relationships, career, and even finances.
If you want to achieve some real change in your life then you must change your story. Instead of telling yourself that your back or hip pains are because you are getting old, or you have some diagnosed condition, make the decision to do something about them, afterall, there are people older than you without low back or hip pains. There are people who don’t even have legs who still workout, and there are people who have hormone problems that still lose weight and improve their health. If you get sick and tired of being sick and tired, and you have a second of motivation to want to make a change, don’t listen to that little voice in your head that might start telling you it won’t work, or you can’t do it, or the excuses that you begin to feed into and just take ACTION. Most successful people will tell you that success in any category, even health, comes down to one thing, your story (what you tell yourself). Your story/mentality explains why one person can use there torn MCL (a knee ligament) as an excuse as to why they cant exercise, eat healthy, golf, hike, swim, or any other activity and yet Tom Brady played his entire 2020 NFL season with a torn MCL and won a Super Bowl. The difference? Tom Brady tells himself a different story. What story are you telling?
