Dr. Brady’s Articles
I have always been extremely passionate about health and wellness. In my borderline obsessive search as to studying the causes of sickness and disease, and how to restore health and function, I feel an obligation to share the information I study with my community. Ignorance is not bliss, it costs Americans millions of dollars, millions of lives, and destroys millions of families. These articles are intended to facilitate your own research so that you and your families can make well-informed healthcare decisions. I hope you enjoy reading and please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns at DrBrady@SpineIntegrativeWellness.com.
-Dr. Brady-
My Wellness Routine – My philosophy on health has always been shaped around my belief that preventing an illness, disease, or injury, is always better than trying to find the cure once it has already happened. The greatest impact you can have on your health, that is within your control, comes from your choices, habits, and routines.
What Story Are You Telling Yourself? – If you want to achieve real change in your life then you must change your story. Instead of telling yourself that your back or hip pains are because you’re getting old, or you have some diagnosed condition, make the decision to do something about them, after all, there are people older than you without low back or hip pains.
Flu & COVID Prevention Protocol – With winter right around the corner, now is a great time to share the evidence-based protocol that my family – kids too – implements to help protect against the flu and other upper respiratory viruses (COVID included).
Your Time is Now – On September 2nd the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published their weekly data update indicating that 94% of COVID-19-related deaths had occurred in people with underlying health problems – chronic illnesses (heart disease, diabetes, obesity, etc.) were the biggest risk factor.
Quarantine Spine – This probably won’t come as a surprise to you, but with people working from home and doing a lot less going out, they have defaulted to sitting around more than ever. Even before COVID-19 hit, the average American was sitting 8-10 hours every day. But after COVID-19 people are sitting even more and are being significantly less active.
Wellness is Not a Joke, Your Life Depends on It – It is quite surreal to see our local grocery stores’ shelves being emptied out, schools being closed, restaurants being shut down, and few cars on the road when driving to my office. To be honest with you, I didn’t really think that government-mandated closings would happen as a result of the Coronavirus but, here we are. I can’t help but write about this because you need to hear it.
Why Are You Overweight? – I often ask this question back to people who ask me if I have any “weight loss tips.” The most common responses I get are: “I have a slow metabolism,” “I had children,” “I have an underactive thyroid,” “I’m getting old,” and “It’s genetic.” The reality is, these aren’t the reasons why obesity has doubled in our adults and tripled in our children over the past 20 years.
Zantac and Cancer – In September 2019, the FDA was made aware that a popular over-the-counter heartburn medication that millions of Americans take had contained dangerously high levels of a chemical that can cause cancer called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).
Are You Confused? – Most people are confused when it comes to making healthcare decisions. I recognized how big of a problem this was after I received the same question in several of my wellness presentations: “How do we know which recommendations to follow?”
Back to School, Back to Health – The start of a new school year is a great time to make lifestyle changes to improve your health and the health of your family. The responsibilities that come with the start of a new year can be daunting, especially for parents juggling multiple kids’ school and activity schedules.
Feeling Well Vs Functioning Well – Your brain sends and receives roughly 100 trillion bits of information every single second to and from your body. These messages travel from the brain, down the spinal cord, out 31 nerves that branch out and supply life to all cells, tissues, and organs, and then get sent back to the brain.
Most Asked Questions – Every month I typically get the same handful of questions from either existing patients, new patients or someone who is just curious about chiropractic. I want to share some of the best ones with you.
Are You Sufficient in Vitamin D? – With summer right around the corner, the importance of exposing your body to sunlight in order to get sufficient Vitamin D is a timely topic. Vitamin D (actually a hormone) is produced from cholesterol in our body when our skin is exposed to Ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) from the sun.
Social Media – My wife and I were recently out to dinner and waiting to be seated. I couldn’t help but notice the number of people sitting on their phones texting, scrolling through Facebook, or taking pictures of their meals to “post.”
Preventing Ear Infections – Ear infections are the second most common disease of childhood and account for roughly 16 million visits to the doctor every year. We’ve been taught that when we get an ear infection, we need to go to the doctor to get antibiotics. But is this the best option?
Toxic Sun Screen – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Between 1973 and 2003, malignant melanoma increased by 83% and continues to increase at a rate of 3% per year.
Text Neck – The average American adult spends roughly 86 hours per month on their smartphone, according to recent data from comScore, a data analytics company. Spending 86 hours a month on your phone is not only sad, but it is detrimental to your overall health.
Acid Reflux – An estimated 33% of Americans suffer from acid reflux, commonly referred to as “heart burn.” Acid reflux has become one of the most expensive chronic gastrointestinal diseases, costing Americans $10 billion each year.
Backpack – Every time I pass a group of kids walking to or from school, I can’t help but notice how enormous some of their backpacks are. With school back in session, it’s important to understand the effects of a backpack that is too heavy, as this can have a significant impact on your children’s health and vitality.
Focus Determines Your Feelings – We all know people who are constantly sharing their diagnoses and health problems with everyone they talk to, almost as if their illness is what defines them as a person and often is the excuse as to why they can or cannot achieve something.
Is Your Water Toxic? – Water is one of the most abundant molecules in all life forms. Considering how important water is for our health and function, the source of our water should be something we pay particular attention to.
Do You Fear Chiropractic? – Recently I was talking with a patient about her friend who was having a number of different health issues. My patient suggested that she come in to see me, and that it sounded like I might be able to help. The friend responded with, “I would never go see a chiropractor.”
Pain Pills and Heart Attacks – Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, have become a household staple for treating everything from hangovers to chronic arthritis. Although most people think these medications are entirely safe, the latest research suggests otherwise.
